How about another forum-game kinda thing. After reading the book Náiv Super I got hung up on making lists. One of my favorites is compiling artists and their quint-essential song. The one song that sums up that artist the best. I´ll start with the once I found.(an artist can be mentioned more than once, but not by the same poster.)
This will help people to find new bands and artist, and get to the core of their artistry. I´ll start:

Bob Dylan - Changing of the Guard

Lou Reed - Stupid Man

Tom Waits - Downtown Train

Nick Cave - Red Right Hand

Neil Young - When you Dance

Flaming Lips - Race for the Price

The Cure - Disintegration

Rolling Stones - Rocks Off

Leonard Cohen - Avalanche

Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication

Metallica - Eye of the Beholder

System of a Down - Science

Iron Maiden - Out of the Shadows

In Flames - Behind Space

Sepultura - Refuse/Resist

Hammerfall - Heeding the Call (Their my favorite live band ever, their live albums are better then their studio albums because the crowd sings along and just makes it even more epic)

Cyprus HIll - Insane in the Brain

Daath - From the Blind

Agreed, but I don't like much rap either, I do like Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and a few others though.

Country is mostly ass, but folk and folkrock is awesome.

But there are exceptions in country:

Johnny Cash - Cocaine Blues

Willie Nelson - Always on my Mind

The Highwaymen - Highwayman

Glen Campbell - By the Time I Get ot Phoenix

Johnny Cash, like him, I don't dislike any one genre as a whole its just country/pop/rap have considerably less music that I will listen to. Old country/rap/hip hop are generally better, with a few exceptions.

New rap is decent, but I don't really like hardcore rap too much.

More into hip hop, that sort of thing.
